What We Do

APK's primary objectives include representing the interests of plantation owners, addressing issues related to various planting industries, and promoting harmonious industrial relations among stakeholders.

The Association of Planters of Kerala (APK) is a prominent organization representing planters involved in the cultivation of tea, rubber, cardamom, and coffee in Kerala. Established in 1939 as the 'Association of Planters of Travancore,' it was renamed in 1957 to reflect the formation of the state of Kerala. APK represents about 60% of the organized plantation sector in Kerala, with six district planters' associations, three commodity growers' associations, and one firm member affiliated with it.

APK's primary objectives include representing the interests of plantation owners, addressing issues related to various planting industries, and promoting harmonious industrial relations among stakeholders.

In recent years, the plantation sector in Kerala has faced significant challenges, including low price realization, rising production costs, and labor shortages. These issues have led several plantations to the brink of closure. These financial strains have prompted APK to seek government support, including financial assistance and the establishment of minimum support prices for key commodities.

To address these challenges, APK has been advocating for the abolition of plantation tax and agricultural income tax in the state budget, aiming to alleviate the financial burden on planters.

Additionally, APK has been exploring sustainable practices and diversification strategies to enhance productivity and ensure the sector's long-term viability. For example, during its annual general meeting, discussions focused on sustainable plantation practices, and the Kerala government has considered introducing multi-crop systems in plantations to improve resilience and profitability.

Furthermore, APK has recognized the importance of value addition in the plantation sector. By forming consortia and developing new brands, planters aim to tap into markets more effectively, thereby enhancing the sector's future prospects in the state.

Overall, APK continues to play a crucial role in representing and supporting Kerala's plantation sector, striving to address current challenges through advocacy, sustainable practices, and strategic initiatives.
